1. “Have You Reviewed This Design for Manufacturability (DFM)?” 

Why it matters: 
A board that looks great in CAD may not be optimized for real-world manufacturing. Oversights in spacing, thermal reliefs, or solder mask alignment can lead to scrap, or worse: field failure. 

What to listen for: 

• Specific DFM recommendations
• Confirmation of compliance with IPC standards
• Suggestions for layout improvements to improve yield or cost

2. “Can You Meet My Compliance Requirements?” 

Why it matters: 
If your board goes into a medical device, aerospace system, or automotive controller, regulatory compliance isn’t optional—it’s essential. 

What to confirm: 

• IPC-A-600 Class 2 or 3 standards
• RoHS, REACH, or Lead-Free compliance
• ISO 9001 or 13485 compliance
• Traceability procedures and documentation for audits

3. “What Testing and Inspection Processes Will You Perform?” 

Why it matters: 
Even minor flaws—like a bad via or misaligned solder pad—can cause mission-critical systems to fail. Knowing your manufacturer’s QA process helps you sleep better at night. 

What to ask: 

• Will this board undergo AOI, X-ray, ICT, or flying probe testing?
• How are defects documented and resolved?
• Can I review test reports before shipment?

4. “How Will You Handle File Versions and Communication?” 

Why it matters: 

Version confusion is one of the most common killers of PCB projects. A single wrong file can trigger the production of unusable boards. 

What to expect: 

• Clear version control practices
• Confirmation protocols before starting fabrication
• A dedicated point of contact who understands your design and timeline

5. “What’s Your Plan If Something Goes Wrong?” 

Why it matters: 
Even the best plans can hit snags. The difference between a minor setback and a major crisis is how your PCB partner responds when something’s off. 

Ask your manufacturer: 

• What’s your resolution process for production issues?
• How quickly can you turn around rework or adjustments?
• How do you keep customers informed in real time?
